SmartMachine OS vs FANUC.
Breaking the data monopoly: Why modern manufacturers are abandoning Focas libraries for native OPC-UA.
The Connectivity Problem
For decades, extracting basic spindle load or axis position data from a FANUC controller required purchasing proprietary Focas drivers, paying for Ethernet options, and writing complex custom middleware just to parse the binary data.
SmartMachine OS is built on a different philosophy: your machine data belongs to you. We expose the entire internal state of the kernel via a native, zero-configuration OPC-UA server and MQTT publisher.
| Feature | FANUC 30i/31i | SmartMachine OS |
|---|---|---|
| Data Extraction | Proprietary Focas Library (Paid option) | Native OPC-UA / MQTT / REST |
| Servo Bus | Closed FSSB (Vendor locked) | Open EtherCAT (Use any drive) |
| Look-Ahead | AICC II (Often a $3k+ paid parameter) | 10k Blocks (Standard) |
| Hardware | Proprietary Yellow Box (~$10k replacement) | Standard x86 IPC (~$800) |
Hardware Lock-In
If a servo drive fails on a FANUC machine, you must replace it with an exact, expensive FANUC replacement because they use a proprietary fiber-optic servo bus (FSSB). SmartMachine OS uses EtherCAT, the global standard for industrial motion. If a drive fails, you can replace it with off-the-shelf hardware from Yaskawa, Beckhoff, Omron, or Delta, vastly reducing downtime and inventory costs.
